CHAKRA HEALING | Is my Root Chakra blocked and what should I do?

Grounded, Secure, Balanced

When you're feeling confident, supported, focused and energised - basically undefeatable, chances are your root chakra is aligned.

If on the other hand you're feeling sluggish, insecure,  then you may need to do some work to activate, clear and align your Root Chakra.

Root Chakra - The Foundation

The Root Chakra, is the first Chakra, also known as the base chakra. In Sanskrit it is called Muladhara, which is the joining of two words - Mula meaning “root” and adhara meaning “support” or “base”.

The Root Chakra is associated with the Earth element and the colour Red.

Where is my Root Chakra located and what does it do?

Your Root Chakra is located at the perineum (base of your spine), along the first three vertebrae and it extends down into your feet and legs. It's connected to your lower back, legs, your feet and is the foundation of life representing safety, stability and security.

How can I tell if my Root chakra is blocked?

A blocked root chakra can manifest mentally, for example if you've been feeling irritated, anxious, sluggish, insecure then these may be some symptoms of a blocked Root Chakra. Symptoms can also be more physical. Constipation, cramps, lower back pain are some potential indications that your Root Chakra is blocked, unaligned or deactivated.

How can I unblock my Root chakra?

A repeated Root Chakra yoga sequence is probably the best way to unblock your Root Chakra but this can be complemented with the addition of chanting/affirmations, crystals and aromatherapy. Our tried and tested sequence takes about 10 minutes.

What yoga poses are best to unblock my Root chakra?

We recommend this yoga sequence, which takes approximately 10 minutes minimum to complete, although the longer the better.

Easy Pose (Sukhasana)

Benefits: Relaxing effect on the mind and body which is helpful in reducing stress and anxiety. Calms the mind, improving concentration and focus and automatically makes you more attentive. It strengthens the back muscles, stretches the knees and ankles and improves the overall body posture. Lengthens the spine and back muscles.

How to: Sit on the edge of a firm blanket. Extend your legs in front of your body and sit up straight, then cross your legs in front of you at the shins. With your knees wide, place each foot beneath the opposite knee. Fold your legs in toward your torso. Place your hands on your knees, palms down. Balance your weight evenly across your sit bones. Align your head, neck, and spine. Lengthen your spine, but soften your neck. Relax your feet and thighs. Gaze straight ahead with soft eyes.

Hold for up to one minute or for the duration

Watch for: If your hips are tight, do not sit flat on the floor! Prop yourself up on a blanket, two blankets or a meditation pillow. Lifting your hips above the level of your knees will greatly reduce stress and discomfort in your hips, knees, and back. It will also open your groin even further and bring your spine into correct alignment, which will help you to stay in the position for much longer periods.

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Benefits: Gently rests, relieves and stretches the lower back, hips, thighs & ankles; inspires introspection as it takes us inward to observe our body, breath, and mind; calms the mind; stretches the back muscles

How to: From lying on your back, gently roll to one side and then slowly make your way onto your belly. Bend your knees and shift your hips back until the buttocks reach the heels and the hamstrings rest on the calves. Bring your hands alongside your feet, palms facing up, or keep your arms extended and your shoulders relaxed.

Stay here for 2 minutes or at least for 5 deep slow breaths.

Watch for: If resting the buttocks on your heels does not feel comfortable, place a folded blanket or a bolster in between them. Or you can also use a bolster between your body and the mat.

Aromatherapy can be used prior to, during or after yoga or meditation session, or as a quick fix. As the Root Chakra is centred around the earth and roots, it's not surprising that the Essential Oils that can be used to help unblock or align are also earthy or have roots. Think Cedarwood, Spruce, Sandalwood, or the earthy tones of Patchouli, Frankincense, Vetiver and even Black Pepper. Ginger, Lavender, Ylang & Clary can also be used.

Rub directly into the soles of your feet (black pepper, patchouli, vetiver); apply to your stomach (ginger, lavender);  add to your bath (cedarwood, vetiver, lavender); or blend with carrier oil and add to pulse points, or simply diffuse prior to or during a session of yoga, meditation or mindfulness.
